When the verb estar is used

The verb estar expresses:

• Temporary state or condition
  Pedro está enfermo. - Pedro is sick.
• Location (both temporary and permanent)
  Carmen está en el salón. -Carmen in the hall. Valencia está en España. - Valencia in Spain.
• Used for adverbial phrases
  Los niños están jugando en el jardín. - Children play in the garden.
• Indicates the result of an action
  La puerta está cerrada. - The door is closed.
• With the preposition para, it translates as to be ready for something
  El tren está para llegar. - The train will arrive soon.
